Eligibility to Register as a Dallas County Voter

State law requires you to register 30 days prior to the election in which you want to participate. This means that if you are not a registered voter and wish to vote in an upcoming election, you must complete your registration at least 30 days beforehand. If you miss the registration deadline, you will not be eligible to vote in the election. It’s crucial to plan ahead and ensure your voter registration is up to date to exercise your right to vote. Remember, you can’t cast your ballot unless you’re officially registered, so don’t miss the deadline.

Registering to Vote

In Texas, you do not need an ID to register to vote. Simply complete a Voter Registration Application and make sure all required fields are filled out. Voter Registration applications can be picked up at your local tax offices, library, and other government offices.

Ready to Vote?

You have two options to vote in person at a Vote Center: during the Early Voting period or on Election Day. When you arrive, election workers will be there to help you.

ID Requirements

In Texas, when you go to vote in person, you need to show one of seven types of photo ID. This is important so you can cast your ballot. The types of IDs you can use are:

Texas Driver's License

Texas Election ID Certificate

Texas Personal ID Card

Texas Handgun License

U.S. Citizenship Certificate with Photo

U.S. Military ID Card

U.S. Passport (Book or Card)

Voter Registration Certificate with Permanent Exception Status

If you don’t have one of the IDs listed above and have a valid reason, you can show another type of ID from List B and fill out a Reasonable Impediment Declaration. List B IDs include:

Certified Birth Certificate (Copy or Original)

Current Utility Bill (Copy or Original)

Bank Statement (Copy or Original)

Government Check (Copy or Original)

Original Paycheck (Copy or Original)

A Provisional Ballot is a special kind of ballot you can use at any Vote Center if there are questions about whether you can vote. If you don’t have an acceptable form of photo ID and don’t fill out a Reasonable Impediment Declaration, you’ll need to sign a paper called an Affidavit of Provisional Voter. After the election, you have six days to show your photo ID so your vote can count.

Voting as a College Student

Your voter registration is tied to where you reside. As a college student, you need to register at the address where you currently reside, which could be your college address or your family’s address.

Voting by Mail

If you consider your family’s address as your residence but will be outside your home county during Early Voting and on Election Day, you may qualify to vote by mail.

Voting In-Person

If you’ll be in your hometown during the election, you can vote in person. Use our Vote Center Finder to find the nearest voting location available on or before Election Day.

Voting During Study Abroad

If you’re a U.S. citizen studying abroad, you can register and vote using a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). The FPCA helps U.S. citizens overseas request absentee ballots from their home state election officials.

Voting as a New Citizen

Before you can vote, you need to register. Once you’re registered, you’ll be able to vote in state, local, and federal elections. Ensure you are officially a U.S. citizen before registering to vote. In Texas, citizenship is a requirement for voter registration and is the first question on the voter registration card. Registering to vote before you are a citizen can impact your citizenship status.

Language Assistance

If English isn’t your primary language and you want to vote in a different language, we offer support to help you. At our Vote Centers, we provide Language Assistance services. Additionally, when voting by mail or requesting election materials, we offer ballots and information in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Here’s what’s available to assist you:

• Voting information and materials (e.g., ballots) are available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
• A tool that allows election workers to communicate with you in your language (including American Sign Language).
• Assistance from a family member or friend whom you bring with you to the voting location to help translate.

 

Voting After a Felony Conviction

Texas automatically restores voting rights to individuals with a final felony conviction after:

• They have completed their sentence, including any term of incarceration, parole, supervision, or probation; or
• They have been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disability to vote

The Texas Secretary of State clarified that the following circumstances are not considered a final felony conviction:

• A conviction on appeal;
• Deferred adjudication; and
• Mere prosecution, indictment or other criminal procedures leading up to, but not yet resulting in the final conviction

In Texas, no government agency will notify you when your voting rights are restored. If your rights have been restored, you still need to apply for voter registration by mailing or hand-delivering a completed Texas Voter Registration Application to our office.

Voting Transportation Services

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is providing free transportation to polling locations within the DART Service Area on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Voters can ride at no charge on all DART buses, trains, GoLink, the Dallas Streetcar, Paratransit Services, and the TRE between EBJ Union Station and CentrePort/DFW Airport Station.

To ride free on election day, riders must show a valid voter registration card.

Plan your Trip on DART to a Voting Location

Riders who need customized trip planning can map out their ride with the “Plan” tool in the free GoPass app or use the Trip Planner on DART.org. DART Customer Service can also assist at 214-979-1111. If you plan your trip directly in Google Maps, enter the voting location as your destination and choose the Transit option (train icon) to get travel directions using DART.
